A Labradoodle is a cross between a Poodle and a Labrador Retriever (F1) or a Labradoodle (F1b). We specialize in F1b mini Labradoodles as our moms are F1 Labradoodles and the dads are mini Poodles. This generally means that they are less-likely to shed since the poodle coat is dominant. Labradoodles are extremely intelligent, and sociable, and are great with children, making them the perfect family dog. They are able to adapt to indoor living but love being outside and hiking or swimming.
Labradoodles began to get popular when an Australian breeder intentionally bred a standard Poodle and a Labrador Retriever hoping to get a hypoallergenic guide dog for visually impaired people. They have been growing in popularity ever since.
Labradoodles are also healthier than normal due to what is called "hybrid vigor". Hybrid vigor is present in most mixed breeds, but especially in Labradoodles making them active, loving, and adventurous!
Both Poodles and Labrador Retrievers are historical descendants of older "water dogs". Water dogs were breeds used by ancient mariners to retrieve objects lost overboard and send messages between boats. Over time they became popular companions of fishermen and hunters who used them as more traditional hunting dogs. In the modern era, these dogs are very popular as family pets due to their intelligence, and desire to please their owners.
Poodles have long been one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, and for good reason. They are extremely intelligent, energetic and affectionate making them well-suited for a wide range of lifestyles. Poodles were originally bred as one of the many "water-dog" breeds mentioned above. They went on to become popular hunting dogs in Germany and France where their curly coat allowed them excel in outdoor work without being affected by the elements. Having a curly coat also means that they are low-shedding and perfect for people with allergies. Because of this background, Poodles love the water the water, they are keen retrievers as well as excellent swimmer's. Poodles, with their high intelligence and bounding energy, remain one of the most popular, adventurous dog breeds.
Labradoodle, just like all doodles, are low shedding dogs due to their poodle genes. It has been repeatedly demonstrated that low shedding dogs are far less likely to cause allergic reactions. While they are not completely non-allergenic, Labradoodles (especially F1b) are the perfect companions for people who have allergic reactions to dogs.
Labradoodles come in 3 general coat types including, curly, straight, and fleece. A fleece (or wavy) coat is characteristic of F1 Labradoodles as they are 50% Labrador and 50% poodle. F1b Labradoodles often have a more curly coat since they have more Poodle in them. The colors of Labradoodle coats can vary quite a bit, depending on who the parents are. Common colors include Apricot, White, Black, Chocolate, Blue Merle and Tan Merle.
